What a Wild Finish!

LSU Logo

So it seems that LSU, who is undefeated in regulation play (as Les Miles said the other day) but has two losses in triple overtime, will be playing for the national championship afterall. After an amazing season that saw a record number of top five teams go down to unranked opponents (I think they just said that there were 17 teams that lost in that fashion this year) we get our final bowl lineups.

Georgia, top-ranked in the SEC going into the weekend slips a bit and takes on Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl. USC gets an interesting matchup with Illinois in the Rose Bowl. Oklahoma gets West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl. In the Orange Bowl we’ll see Kansas try to rebound from their season-ending loss to Missouri against Virginia Tech. And the final game of the year pits LSU against Ohio State in the BCS title game on January 7th.

What happened to Missouri, last weeks #1 team? They lost to Oklahoma for the second time this season, but this time they also lost the Big 12 championship and their #1 ranking. In fact they dropped completely out of a BCA bowl, primarily because there is a rule that says only two teams from any given conference can get into the BCA bowls. Missouri gets to play Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl.

The SEC did fairly well with 9 teams in various bowl games. The full SEC schedule:

Mississippi State (lost to LSU big early in the season) plays Central Florida in the Libery Bowl.
Alabama plays Colorado (who upset Oklahoma) in the Independence Bowl.
Kentucky ends up playing Florida State in the Music City Bowl.
Auburn plays Clemson (another Tigers versus Tigers game) in the Chick-fil-A (formerly Peach) Bowl.
Tennesse plays Wisconson in the Outback Bowl.
Arkansas plays Missouri in the Cotton Bowl (what, no corporate sponsor? :-P)
Florida plays Michigan in the Capitol One Bowl.
Georgia gets Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl.
And of course, LSU gets to play Ohio State in the BCS Championship Bowl.

I’m probably most excited to see Florida versus Michigan, Georgia against Hawaii, and even Arkansas against Missouri. Missouri is going to be a good draw for the Cotton Bowl as they’re not far away and their quarterback is from the Dallas / Fort Worth area so he’s probably well known in the area.
