Running Hog Wild

I was worried about the game against Arkansas starting several weeks back. They were ranked at the beginning of the season and they have a Heisman candidate at running back. They lost a few tough games, and as a result of their four losses they came into Baton Rouge without a ranking. They also came in with nothing to lose, and a whole lot to gain. And gain they did, especially on the ground.

I think LSU played “tight” and as a result they let Arkansas stay around too long. They also could not handle the number of active and highly talented running backs that Arkansas put on the field. The “wild hog” formation proved to be LSU’s undoing with McFadden reeling off several very long touchdown runs from that configuration. He also threw for a touchdown. Here’s McFadden’s line from the game:

Rushing: 32 attempts for 206 yards, three touchdowns
Passing: 4 attempts, 3 completions, one touchdown

His touchdowns were 16 yards, 9 yards, and 73 yards. LSU gave up another long touchdown run to a different running back as well.

Ah well.

In short, LSU still plays in the SEC title game against Tennessee, and will probably play in the Sugar Bowl as the SEC champion. But it would have been fun to root for the tigers in another national championship game.
