Just heard someone on ESPN suggest that LSU was the “dark horse” candidate to win the SEC West. I would be happy if he’s right… but I suspect he’s wrong. LSU has too tough a schedule to compete with Alabama and Ole Miss this year.

So in fact Alabama did leapfrog LSU into the #2 spot and garnered some first place votes along the way, at least in the AP poll. The USA Today coach’s poll has LSU #2. I don’t think we deserve that ranking, at least not yet. Georgia did fall to #11 when I didn’t expect them to drop out of the top ten. (They’re #10 in the coach’s poll.)

Oklahoma is #1 in both polls, which is not surprising at all.

LSU has an open date next week which gives them time to rest and recover before going into the toughest part of their schedule. At Florida, at South Carolina, home against Georgia. They take a break against traditional opponent Tulane and then return to SEC action against Alabama. They need to win four of those five games. It’s going to be tough.

Just watched some ESPN while at lunch, and there are some more interesting trivia bits. This is the earliest in the year a #1 team has ever lost. It has happened several times before, but USC is the first #1 to lose to an unranked team.

I got lucky, I guess. Alabaman did, in fact, move ahead of Wisconson (at least in the AP poll) and Auburn did drop, but only to 15. In the AP LSU moved ahead of Missouri, while they stayed in their original spot in the USA Today poll.

The SEC has 3 of the top five teams in the AP, and LSU plays both of the other two in the coming weeks. They also play Alabama who is in the top 10 in both polls this week.

Hi, Marcy, and welcome to my blog. I apologize for not responding sooner, but thank you for your comment.

Yes, my car is well out of warranty (it’s a 2001 model) and no, I have not yet tried the experiment of running on lower octane gasoline. I do understand that it was designed to run on 93 (or higher) but I thought I was told that the computer would automatically adjust the timing if it detected engine knock caused by lower octane fuels.

But as I said, so far I have not tested out the concept, I was just curious about the results. Thanks again, and welcome.

Hope it isn’t under warranty still, if you decide to run lower octane fuel. You will have voided the warranty if you switch out, and an engine problem results that the shop shows was caused or exacerbated by running low-octane. Also, yes – you will notice a difference in performance. It’s designed for premium. Sports cars have different fuel chamber designs for faster speeds and acceleration, necessitating higher octane.
