Do College Football Polls Mean Anything?
At the beginning of the season USC was #4, now they’re #12. BYU was #20, then jumped to #9 after defeating Oklahoma, who by the way was ranked #3 to open the season. (I questioned that, given the lack of experience on the o-line, but I don’t get to vote…) After getting wacked by Florida State (at home, no less) BYU has dropped back down to just about where they started the season.
Miami has looked good so far, and has been rewarded by a return to the top ten where they used to be a fixture. Miami has two impressive wins over ranked teams, and their schedule doesn’t get any easier as they take on Virginia Tech next week and Oklahoma the week following that.
And LSU? LSU is nowhere near the #7 team in the country. They just keep moving up because everyone else around them has lost a game. The strength of schedule for the Tigers got a nice boost when Washington took out USC, but we’ll have to see how USC (and Washington, for that matter) fare for the rest of the season.
