What Price For Top Speed?

The Corvette has long been the “value leader” for fast cars in the USA. Their primary competition is the Dodge Viper. I paid between $40,000 and $50,000 for my car several years ago and it has been worth every penny. With the upcoming release of the ZR-1 at an expected price point somewhere north of $100,000 the Corvette will jump the Viper in price.

Neither, of course, can touch the Bugatti Veyron in any category. The Veyron has a price tag well north of a million dollars, over 1,000 horsepower, and twice as many cylinders as either the Vette or Viper. It’s an interesting configuration that essentially bolts two V8 engines in a “w” formation to a single crankshaft. There are documented reports of the car exceeding 250mph for extended runs. Not too extended, however, as the car runs out of gas fairly quickly at that speed. According to one report I read the Veyron only goes 2.5 miles on a gallon of gas.

According to the wiki article on the car, it has a total fuel capacity of 26.4 US gallons. Assume the car starts out at 250mph burning through a gallon of gas every 2.5 miles the total duration of the sprint is only 66 miles (2.5 miles / gallon * 26.4 gallons = 66 miles). That means you get about sixteen minutes of top speed before you’re sucking fumes. Either my math is wrong or someone else has access to different data because a quote from the wiki article suggests that the time frame is only 12 minutes, rather than 16. They also say the tires wear out after only fifteen minutes at top speeds.
