Next Year?

LSU lost to Ole Miss yesterday. LSU now has a losing record within the SEC. Despite that, they will still likely go to a bowl game but certainly not a top-tier bowl. With the win Ole Miss now has the inside track to the Cotton Bowl, should they finish out the season with a win against Mississippi State. LSU closes out against Arkansas. Look for Ole Miss to enter the top 25 and LSU to quite possibly drop out this week.

Florida and Alabama continue to roll. Florida crushed Citidel and ‘Bama took on Mississippi State. Next week ‘Bama and Auburn clash in the Iron Bowl, where anything can happen. If Alabama can remain undefeated it sets up an extremely interesting matchup against Florida in the SEC title game. If they win, they’re in the national title game in Saban’s second year as head coach. If they lose to Florida, then Florida quite possibly could be playing for the national title. Either way, there will be an SEC representative in the BCS title game.

The SEC has not been as deep or strong this year compared to previous years. LSU’s drop (along with Tennessee) will hurt the conference power ratings. The Big 12 is looking extremely good, and by most articles I have read will provide the other opponent for the BCS bowl.

Speaking of the Big 12… the worst possible case has come to pass. There are currently three teams with 11-1 records, each of them has beat a different opponent. Texas Tech lost to Oklahoma which lost to Texas which lost to Texas Tech. So who is the best team? The Big 12 has decided that the final tie-breaker (should it be necessary) is the poll ranking. That’s right, some voter on the east or west coast can help decide the Big 12 South championship. Oklahoma has one final game and it’s not a pushover… they play at Oklahoma State. State can really mess things up by winning that game, as they have already lost to Texas and Tech. Tech finishes at Bayler and will be expected to win that game easily, leaving them at 12-1. Texas completes there season at Texas A&M in a game where they should also be favored, especially playing at home. If they win out, they’re also 12-1.

Can Oklahoma State beat Oklahoma? It’s not outside of the realm of possibilities. State has played all of their toughest opponents on the road so far. The won at Missouri, lost at Texas, and lost at Texas Tech. They finally get a break with Oklahoma at home. The Cowboys have been effective on defense, holding Texas to 28 points and Missouri to the same score. But they got shell-shocked by Texas Tech, and I think Oklahoma’s offense is certainly as powerful. It will be an interesting game

Missouri remains on top of the Big 12 North and the Big 12 officials have to hope that they don’t win the title game, due to their losses against several top teams in the southern division already.
