LSU Has an Easy Game, SEC Shakeup, Big 12 Shoot Out

This was a great week to be a college football fan, wasn’t it? The annual “cocktail party” between Florida and Georgia was a coming-out game for the Gators. They’ve scored 40+ points in three straight SEC games, but this was clearly the most impressive. Take away a botched extra point against Ole Miss and we might have two undefeated teams heading for the SEC title game. Alabama took care of business, but Florida looks like the team headed for the championship at this point.
LSU defeated Tulane, but Lee threw yet another “pick six” in the game. He’s going to have to do better next year.
In the Big 12 Texas had their fourth game in a row against a top-10 opponent. They took care of Oklahoma, Missouri, and Oklahoma State. But could they take on Texas Tech on their own field? Texas Tech jumped out to an early lead with a safety, a touch down, and a couple of field goals. Texas came with with a few field goals and a punt return for a touchdown. The game went back and forth with Texas taking their first lead with about a minute and a half to go in the game. The broadcast then showed a footnote on the screen that said Texas Tech had a dozen or so scoring drives of less than 1.5 minutes in the season so far. That was quite appropriate, as the Red Raiders moved down the field and scored a touchdown (they only needed a field goal to take the lead) and left only one second on the clock.
The fans stormed the field, so the referees had their hands full. They also reviewed the call and then confirmed the touch down. The fans stormed the field again. The net result was a couple of penalties on the Texas Tech kickoff team… they kicked from the seven and a half yard line! Texas tried to lateral a few times but one of the laterals was ultimately grabbed by a Red Raider, leaving Texas looking at defeat.
It was a great game to watch, with a little bit of everything. No trombone players getting spiked though.
Michigan finished their advance to obscurity. Their loss this weekend guarantees that they will not be able to go to a bowl game, breaking their streak of over thirty years.
Tulsa ran their record to 8-0 playing against smaller schools. Playing against Arkansas – one of the weaker SEC teams – they dropped from unbeaten status. Utah stayed unbeaten but still has to play TCU and BYU to finish the season.
