Miranda Lambert: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Last fall we got to hear Miranda Lambert at the Texas State Fair. I like all sorts of music and certainly enjoyed her show. It was nice to hear that she is essentially a local girl as she grew up in a small town named Lindale located east of Dallas. Miranda has an interesting reputation, based on her first two releases. Her first release was named Kerosene, and the title track was about a failed relationship.

Forget you high society, I’m soakin’ it in Kerosene
Light ‘em up and watch them burn, teach them what they need to learn HA!
Dirty hands aint made for shakin’, aint a rule that aint worth breakin’
Well I’m giving up on love cause love’s given up on me

Her second release was named “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” and opens with her current hit, “Gunpowder & Lead”. Hm. If you take the humor away from the Dixie Chicks song “Goodbye Earl” you might have an idea of what that one is about. ;-) The subject matter is hardly funny, as it deals with a story of a wife waiting at home for her husband (or ex, it doesn’t really say) to get out of jail. The wife has plans, summarized in the chorus:

I’m goin’ home, gonna load my shotgun
Wait by the door and light a cigarette
If he wants a fight well now he’s got one
And he ain’t seen me crazy yet
He slapped my face and he shook me like a rag doll
Don’t that sound like a real man
I’m going to show him what a little girls made of
Gunpowder and lead

So is it any wonder she’s getting a reputation? To be honest, her music is more than that. I hope that she doesn’t get stereotyped because one of the most meaningful songs on either album is named “Famous In A Small Town” and it really captures what it’s like to grow up in a small town. She’s worth a listen.
