National Champs

After a wild and wacky season that saw all sorts of #2 teams lose and several weeks with multiple losses in the top ten and some interesting bowl results (Oklahoma comes to mind) the one thing that we can say with certainty is this: LSU won the designated championship game. Are they the best team? That’s another question.
The main issue is this: there aren’t enough games to settle the arguments as to who is the better team. USC and Georgia both finished the season extremely strong, and were rewarded by top 3 rankings just behind LSU in the polls. There are all sorts of proposals for a “plus one” or an eight team playoff (or more) and in my opinion, until something like that is done there will rarely be a true 100% consensus national champion. But for this season, LSU gets the nod and I’m happy with that.
Some items of interest from this wacky season:
- Thirteen teams ranked in the top five were beaten by unranked teams.
- The top two ranked teams lost on the same weekend three times… including the final week of the season. This is what allowed LSU to sneak back into the title game even with two losses.
- The SEC sent 9 teams into bowl games, and their record was 7-2. That’s impressive.
- LSU is the first repeat champ in the BCA game. They also won in 2002 against Oklahoma.
I look forward to next year.
