Generation Days
I like to count how many different generations of Corvette I see on the road in any given day. Before the C6 came out the most I would typically see was 3. C3’s, C4’s, and certainly C5’s are all fairly common in the Dallas area. On rare occasions I would get a four generation day when the odd C1 or C2 would pop up. Now part of the rules are that I can’t count cars that are in car shows or on car lots, only cars that are actually being driven on the road.
One of the other games my wife and I will play while on trips is watching for license plates from the various states. We like to complete sets like the west coast (easy), the gulf coast (fairly easy when travelling on I-20 to Louisiana), the east cost (harder), and the four corners (Maine, Florida, California, and Washington). The four corners are fairly hard, although you can often get Maine from 18 wheeler trailers.
What do these two items have in common?
A few years ago I was in Denver (Colorado) on a business trip. I stayed over the weekend to spend time with family that I have out there. On that particular Saturday the weather was absolutely beautiful, so I decided to get out of the house and run a few errands. First I saw the standard C5, C4, and C3. A typical three generation day. Then I saw a C2 driving down the road, giving me a four generation day. Not too long after that I pulled into traffic and noticed that the car in front of me had a Maine license plate. And it was on a car, not a truck! I called my wife on my cell phone just to let her know. I also added an aside that I was working on a four generation day as well.
That evening my parents, sister, and I went to a restaurant for dinner. As we were pulling into the parking lot I burst out laughing. There, parked in front of the restaurant, was a beautiful C1 convertible. I had just attainted the formerly unattainable, a five generation day.
Of course I had to call my wife to tell her that as well.
Today, of course, a five generation day is still difficult but not as hard since the release of the C6. And so far I have not managed a full six-generation day. Everyone needs a goal in life.
