Is LSU that good? or was Virginia Tech that bad?

Last week I opened my commentary on the 2007 LSU Tigers season with an entry titled, “Good opening but questions to answer…”. To be honest, I feel like I could do the same this week. Going into the game I wasn’t sure Virginia Tech deserved their #9 rating. It seems that early season polls are hit or miss, and this year more miss than hit. (You don’t have to look much further than Michigan which opened the season at #5 to see a glaring example.) Virginia Tech has had a great defense the past few years. Did that drive their ranking?
Here’s a quote from an AP article:
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) – LSU didn’t need any small-school sacrificial lambs on its early season schedule to post a couple of gaudy blowouts. The tenacious Tigers made Virginia Tech look like a pushover instead of the ninth-ranked team in the nation.
In any case, the box score says it all to me:
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | Final | |
| Virginia Tech | 0 | 0 | 7 | 0 | 7 |
| LSU | 14 | 10 | 10 | 14 | 48 |
LSU scored early, often, and consistently. They scored on single plays of 67 yards (rush) and 34 yards (pass) and 28 yards (pass). They outgained the hopeless Hokies 327 – 40 in just the first half.
So, is LSU that good? I guess we’ll have to wait a few weeks to find out. They play Middle Tennessee State next week (must be homecoming), and then South Carolina comes to visit. Steve Spurrier managed to coach one upset out of his team already, so I hope the Tigers take them seriously. Two games later they get the Florida Gaters. At home in Tiger Stadium, also known as Death Valley.
Now that should be a game.
