But officer, I could not possibly have been going that fast…

Speed cameras… love ‘em or hate ‘em, but it seems they’re here to stay. There was an episode on Mythbusters (one of the best. shows. ever!) that showed you could not possibly be going fast enough to avoid getting your picture taken. But there are ways to escape, it seems. Earlier this year someone in a rental Hyundai Sonata was clocked going 147 miles per hour, 82 over the speed limit. First of all, it’s a rental, so you gotta give the guy credit for at least not blowing out his own car. :-) And it was a V-6. But still, 147 mph? And it gets better.

Here was the itenerary this guy followed:

First speed camera: 128 mph
Second speed camera: 147 mph
Exited freeway, bought $51 worth of gasoline (speeding does suck down the juice, doesn’t it?)
Back on freeway a few minutes later, clocked at 102 mph by a third camera
Last speed camera, 105 mph

Altogether the driver got clocked in four different zones, going over 100 mph in each case. The total penalties would have added up to $5,000 and a year in jail. All because he slept over at his girlfriend’s house and was late to work. I hope she was worth it. ;-)

The Challenge

When the story was published it didn’t take long for the challenges to start. 147? In a Hyundai?

Two Hyundai engineers certified (whatever that means) that the car was incapable of exceeding 137. Oh, well, that clears it up. In a Car & Driver test in 2005 they ran a Sonata V-6 to 137 flat-out, which matched with the assessment from the engineers. But as they say, if there is reasonable doubt, let him out. (Heh, I just made that up, you can guess where it was inspired from…) The offender was allowed to plead to one count of criminal endangerment, one of reckless driving, and one of excessive speeding at 102 miles per hour. He got one week in jail, a fine over one thousand dollars, and a year of probation.

And the speed cameras? From what I can tell from the article, they’re still in place. But if you get caught going 147 in your Corvette, I don’t think the same excuse will get you out of jail. 8)
